The First Toronto Ruby Job Fair.

Let's face it: it's better to be a Ruby developer than a car manufacturer in 2009, but things have definitely slowed down — for everyone. And yet, there are solid reasons why this is an excellent time to start new projects, launch companies, and create new markets. By definition, Ruby has been adopted by creative individuals that grew frustrated with risk averse bureaucracies.

We believe that there are huge number of opportunities to be found during this economic downturn, both for freelance developers and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. As with most tragic historical near-misses, there are just a huge number of connections that aren't made even in our own collective back yard.

That said, we also believe that Ruby people are determined self-starters that aren't afraid to self-promote. Anything worth doing in life requires hard work and sacrifice. Sadly, while many developers are patient and willing to think orthogonally, we rarely get an opportunity to practice the other more social skills which make us desirable as team members, project managers, and co-founders. Unless we overcome our shyness and learn to speak eloquently about our experience and skill sets, we have nobody to blame for our work prospects but ourselves.

Our solution is to gather students, developers, development companies, and of course project leaders and company founders for a good old-fashioned career fair. The first annual Employment.nil? Ruby Job Fair will be held at The Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Canada on Saturday June 6th, 2009 from 11am-6pm. The event is free to the public.

So, what happens at Employment.nil?

There will be room for 35-40 bristol board posters, which are set up on long tables. Rubyists will be able to decorate their own (free standing) poster with screen shots, charts, photos, and diagrams. Duotangs (on a string) with source code printouts is highly encouraged. You might want to bring business cards, too. The general idea is that you hang out near your poster and greet people as they come in, offering to explain some of the projects that you've worked on or why you love programming Ruby so damn much.

There will be no computers of any kind allowed! iPhone apps are cheating, too. White boards for live coding are okay, while tasteful use of magic markers, sparkles and stickers is strongly encouraged. There will in fact be real, serious prizes awarded by a team of impartial judges for the best posters, best presentation, and other categories which seem appropriate but we haven't thought of yet.

This is a light-hearted but entirely real attempt at demonstrating that our Ruby development community in Toronto is totally awesome, and that we support each other as best we can whenever possible. Spots will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Entry is tiered based on need: each poster costs $15 for students, $20 for an independent developer, and $30 for a team or small company. The spots are for programmers working primarily with Ruby, and intended to be solo or small (less than 20 person?) companies. We expect and encourage developers from the junior through expert level, and we certainly welcome people without prejudice for gender, sexual orientation, religion or class. We do, however, require that you look presentable, brush your teeth and wear deodourant.

If you work as a Ruby programmer in the Toronto area, and you're willing to embrace the ultimate constraint of communicating in person with actual real people, then we cordially invite you to come and get hired.
